Sándor Márai
Sándor Márai
(1900–1989)

Sándor Márai cannot be strictly categorized as a Slovak Hungarian, but among the Hungarians living in Slovakia, he is often regarded as an "honorary" Slovak Hungarian due to his connections to the region. Born in Košice in 1900, Márai moved to Budapest in 1918, before Košice became part of Czechoslovakia. Thus, he did not directly experience life as a Hungarian minority in Slovakia. Becoming a true "citizen of the world," Márai travelled extensively outside of Hungary and gained recognition as a writer. He welcomed the Vienna Decision of 1938, which resulted in Košice being returned to Hungary. However, his disappointment grew after the Second World War, as his civic values clashed with the communist dictatorship. In 1948, he went into exile and never returned to Hungary, passing away in the USA in 1989. Throughout his life, he maintained a loyalty to bourgeois values and steered clear of extremism. Despite his travels, he nostalgically remembered his hometown of Košice, and to this day, Košice preserves his memory. Márai's works enjoyed success not only in Hungary but also in many other countries, with notable works including " Egy polgár vallomásai", "A gyertyák csonkig égnek", "Füves könyv".
