Famous personalities associated with the territory of present-day Slovakia

The following is a compilation of people who are not Slovak Hungarians but are somehow connected to the territory of today's Slovakia, and therefore enjoy outstanding respect among Slovak Hungarians.


Mór Jókai (1825–1904) was a renowned Hungarian writer born in Komárom, which is located in present-day Slovakia. He is celebrated as the pinnacle of Hungarian romantic literature and his literary contributions are esteemed not only in Hungary but also internationally. To honour his legacy, the Jókai Theater in Komárom and an elementary school in the same city bear his name, serving as enduring reminders of his cultural significance.

Ármin Vámbéry (1832–1913), a distinguished scientist and orientalist, was born in Szentgyörgy and spent his formative years in Dunaszerdahely, both of which are areas within present-day Slovakia. Recognizing his contributions, Dunaszerdahely rightfully commemorates his memory, with two educational institutions in the city named after him. Additionally, Vámbéry was honored as an honorary citizen of Dunaszerdahely, further solidifying his lasting impact on the region.

Lajos Kassák (1887–1967) – A poet and visual artist born in Érsekújvár, Lajos Kassák is renowned for his contributions to Hungarian avant-garde literature and fine arts. He gained recognition internationally for his artistic endeavours, although he no longer lived in his hometown after it was annexed to Czechoslovakia.

Zoltán Kodály (1882–1967) – A composer and folk music researcher, Zoltán Kodály's activities were linked to Galánta, where he completed his folk school studies and collected folk songs. Despite the annexation of his hometown to Czechoslovakia, Kodály's legacy endures, with Galánta even naming a school after him. One of his notable works is the Galántai dances.

József Csermák (1932–2001) – An Olympic champion hammer thrower, József Csermák was born in Szent, then in the territory of Czechoslovakia. Although his hometown was re-joined to Hungary when he was still a child, his sports activities and successes remained closely linked to Hungary throughout his career.
